About Montreal
Montreal is a city in Canada, on the Saint Lawrence River in the province of Quebec. In the years 1844–1849 Montreal was the capital of the Province of Canada. It is the second largest city in Canada, the largest seaport in the eastern part of the country and the main economic and cultural center of the French-speaking part of Canada. It was founded as a small French settlement named Mont Royal in honor of the king - hence the current name. After the incorporation of two suburban districts on January 1, 2001, the number of inhabitants is 1.6 million (urban complex 3.5 million, 2001). The city is divided into 25 districts (French: arrondissements). Some of them were annexed to Montreal by the decision of the Quebec government in 2001. This sparked opposition from residents of the annexed districts. Following the June 2004 referendum, on January 1, 2006, some of the newly incorporated districts, inhabited by 13% of the city's current population, separated from Montreal.
